Blog: Next New

A type of new media that could be created is using virtual reality (VR) to do point-of-view (POV) tours of a certain area. If a person cannot afford to travel somewhere, or just wants to explore a new place for a short amount of time, they can "hire" someone from a company that does these tours to "take" the customer around somewhere like Times Square in New York, for example. The customer would give instructions on where to go, and using a chat that appears in the worker's VR headset, they can ask them to look up at buildings or other attractions. The customer would also have a VR headset, or they can just view the video through a type of live stream.

Blog: P2P

File-sharing is the act of distributing, or sharing, digital files that can be Ebooks, pictures, documents, etc. P2P file-sharing is the same as file-sharing, just that it involves the use of P2P technology (such as a network or software). In the article "The BitTorrent Effect" by Clive Thompson, the P2P file-sharing network Kazaa is brought up. The article states, "If two peers try to swap a compressed copy of Meet the Fokkers - say, 700 megs - the recipient will receive at a speedy 1.5 megs a second, but the sender will be uploading at maybe one-tenth of that rate. Thus, one-to-one swapping online is inherently inefficient. It's fine for MP3s but doesn't work for huge files." This is an issue people face with P2P because there are more people downloading than uploading. Sharing the movie Meet the Fokkers is an example of P2P file-sharing because it is done through Kazaa rather than emailing someone directly. Another example of P2P file-sharing would

Blog: Wiki So Far

I have been working on the Social Media Acronyms and Gaming pages so far. I've edited the Social Media Acronyms page a lot, mainly adding new terms to the "Technical Acronyms" section as I saw that it was lacking terms that could be useful, such as acronyms people use to refer to specific computer parts (CPU, GPU, PSU, etc.). I have also planned to contribute to the Gaming page by talking about the game Runescape. So far I have only added pictures and the term, but eventually I will add a general description of the game and potentially talk about specifics in the game.

Blog: Privacy

In all or most social media websites, a user is willingly forfeiting their privacy in exchange for being able to use the website. On Instagram, for example, users will post photos of themselves, their families, their homes, their neighborhoods, etc. All of this information, if you were to compile it in a folder and then hand it to the user, is extremely personal. If you then asked them if they would be willing to hand that folder over to a random person on the street, they would think it's creepy. But, because Instagram is now normalized, and this random person on the street is now an audience composed of both people the user does and does not know, they are more okay with it. It is difficult now to use the more popular social media sites whilst remaining anonymous due to this, and the only "solutions" there might be for this issue are to not use these websites, or to be more careful with what is posted online.

Blog: Advice

I would advise Baruch College to use sites such as Facebook or Twitter to post updates on the school. They could make posts such as letting students know if there are any events like the career fair going on, or if the school is going to be closed on a certain day. Another website that Baruch could use is YouTube to post informative videos for students. Video demonstrations could be made to show how CunyFirst works for enrolling into classes. There could also be video tours of the school posted so students who are new will know where Student Advisement is located.
